How AFC Wimbledon's start in 2019/20 compares to Ipswich, Sunderland & other League One clubs

AFC Wimbledon have the toughest starts to the League One season - on paper at least.

The club’s opening six opponents had an average finishing position of 8.5 in the league last season. That’s the highest average in League One.

Oxford United have the next toughest start to the season. Their opening six matches - which takes us to the first international break - are against teams with an average finishing position of 9.0 last season.

Gillingham have the next toughest start (10.2) along with Ipswich (10.2), followed jointly by Burton and Sunderland (10.3 each).

In contrast, Accrington Stanley have the division's easiest start to the season. They could get off to a flier, with their opening six matches being against teams who had an average finishing league position of 21.2 last season.

Rotherham have the next easiest start (19.0), followed by MK Dons (17.8) and Wycombe Wanderers (15.7).

The average finishing league positions have been worked out using where teams finished in the league last season.

Relegated teams were given the positions 1st, 2nd and 3rd, while those promoted were given their positions relevant to League One - 25th, 26th, 27th and 30th.
