How a town is repaying the GP who treated them for years after her diagnosis with rare cancer

She's helped them through countless illnesses and ailments.

But now it's this Northumberland community's turn to help a much-loved GP, as she faces treatment for a cancer so rare she'd hardly heard of it before her diagnosis.

Mum-of-two Georgina Morgan was appendix cancer in August last year.

Since then, she says she's been "overwhelmed" by the support she's received from locals in Rothbury, Northumberland.

On Sunday, her patients, colleagues, friends and family raised more than £8,000 taking part in a charity walk through the town in aid of Pseudomyxoma Survivor, which funds research into Georgina's incredibly rare cancer.

More than 400 people gathered at Rothbury Community Hospital, where Georgina's surgery, The Rothbury Practice, is based.

Georgina said: "It was an absolutely brilliant day, the weather was beautiful, there was a massive, massive turnout, which was incredible.

"We raised a fantastic amount of money as well. There was a lovely, positive vibe about the whole thing, we had everyone from young children to some of my more mature patients doing the walk.

"If you were trying to define 'community', then this is it, this is what a community is.

"It was quite overwhelming at times, there were so many people, I had school friends and friends from Tyneside come to see me, but it was the support of the wider community that really meant a lot.

"It was really representative of living in a small, friendly place like Rothbury."

Organiser Sam Davidson, senior manager of Northumbria Primary Care which runs The Rothbury Practice, added: "I am overwhelmed by the generosity of Georgina’s supporters.

"We would also like to give a special thanks to all of the volunteers and especially the WI who provided a magnificent spread of cakes and refreshments, most welcome at the end  of the walk."
