How a pair of trainers alerted Pablo Hernandez to Manchester United rivalry

When Leeds United take on Manchester United at the Optus Stadium on Wednesday, there will be one player wearing a white shirt who has scored against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Pablo Hernandez says one of his best memories in football is scoring Valencia's only goal in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in the Champions League back in 2010. His teammate that day? One Juan Mata.

Hernandez told reporters he'd been in touch with his former teammate when he arrived in Australia on Sunday. He said: "Yesterday when I arrived here (Perth), I text him and he text me: 'See you Wednesday'.

"He told me he wants my shirt and I want his shirt, I have a lot of his shirts but I want the new one. He was my teammate for four years in Valencia and my roommate and I am happy to play against him.

"The best memory for me is I played in the Champions League with Valencia and we played in Manchester United's stadium, Old Trafford. We drew 1-1 and I scored the goal. It was special for me because I am the only one in Valencia to score in this stadium."

In that game nine years ago, the two lined up on the same side but this time they will be facing up against each other on opposing sides of one of football's most bitter rivalries.

Hernandez shared how he had found out about how Leeds United fans felt about their rivals from across the Pennines. He said: "I haven't lived these games but I know the people tell me some things. And I know this because I remember one day I go to Elland Road with red trainers and somebody told me, 'No, no, no. Not red here'. So I understand this rivalry.

"Yeah, obviously it's a special game for us. For both clubs, for the fans, and I think it's a good moment, good experience being in Perth and we hope we can enjoy this game. The players, and most importantly the fans.

"We want to play this game in the Premier League in the future, we hope. I think it's very important for the fans because we want to see this game more times in the future and I think it's a good moment for the fans to enjoy this game."

Pablo Hernandez signed for Leeds United in 2016 initially on loan and is about to kick off his fourth consecutive season in West Yorkshire. He has made 115 appearances for the club, scoring 25 goal.

Leeds United take on Manchester United at the Optus Stadium on Wednesday with a 12 noon UK-time kick off.
