How a consortium member inadvertently sent Newcastle United fans into takeover meltdown

Newcastle United fans certainly have takeover fever at the moment after speculation aplenty this year and Mehrdad Ghodoussi's tweets this morning did little to damper the tension.

Ghodoussi is of course a consortium member of the attempted Saudi takeover at the Magpies and when he tweeted about 'some good news' this morning, it naturally set the pulses racing among supporters.

Mike Ashley is keen to sell Newcastle but due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Magpies' owner has all-but given up hope of moving on this season.

Fans are eager for fresh blood at the top of the club and have had to endure the teasing of a takeover by Amanda Staveley's largely Saudi-funded consortium, with Ghodoussi her husband and a member of the consortium.

So when Ghodoussi tweeted this morning about 'finally some good news' in regards to the reducing of coronavirus restrictions around Christmas time, Newcastle fans initially thought he was talking about a potential takeover.

One fan said: "Don’t do that to me Mehrdad! My heart nearly went into takeover overload!"

Another added: "You had me there for a minute."

A further supporter added: "Hi @ghodoussi Merry Xmas to you, hope you are looking after our Mandy. this time next year, we ll be celebrating pre-Christmas winning games at St James Park. Keep the faith. we are still waiting for you and Amanda."

Recognising that he had sent Newcastle fans into takeover overdrive, Ghodoussi followed up his initial tweet by saying: "Apologies for the last Tweet. Didn’t mean to give everyone a heart attack. #NUFC"
