How a £20,000 community farm in Kirkstall could provide locals with fruit and veg

A community farm could soon provide hundreds of people in Kirkstall with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Kirkstall Valley Development Trust have set out ambitious plans to turn council-owned land near Cardigan Fields into a community-run scheme, which would see local residents at the centre of the project.

Alongside growing fresh food, Kirkstall Valley Farm would host host community events and education projects, all while championing sustainable living.

To make the dream become a reality, £20,000 is needed to buy a tractor, farming equipment, polytunnels, green manure seed, toilets and a social area.

More than 30 people have already pledged their support to the campaign by raising £3,000 - but there is still a long way to go, and the founders are urging people to donate what they can to get the scheme off the ground.

One supporter said: "Exciting and inspiring! Can't wait to see the veg growing and enjoy the wildlife on the farmland."

Another comment on the Crowdfunder said: "I’m looking forward to supporting and getting involved with volunteering for this great community project, protecting our green space and bringing people together."
