Tom Hovasse, who led the Japan women's basketball team to an improbable silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, will get a chance to work his magic with the men's team.
The Japan Basketball Association announced Tuesday that Hovasse, 54, has been named head coach of the men's national team to replace Julio Lamas.
Toru Onzuka, 42, who served as Hovasse's assistant at the Olympics, will take over the women's team. With Hovasse taking a break following the Olympics with his future undecided, Onzuka was already set to take charge of the team at the Women's Asian Cup, which starts Sept. 27 in Jordan.
Both Lamas and Torsten Loibl, who was the director and coach of the men's and women's 3x3 teams at the Olympics, are leaving their posts at the end of their contracts.
