Houthi Branch of General People's Congress Slams Pro-Legitimacy Officials

The General People's Congress (GPC) branch that is controlled by the Houthis in Sanaa, denied any rifts among its members, reiterating its disavowal of party leaderships that show support to Yemen’s legitimacy forces.

In a statement, the party responded sarcastically to recent calls by some GPC officials, led by Prime Minister Ahmed Obeid bin-Dagher, to unify the party.

Quoting a reliable source, it insisted that it will remain a national and strong party that will foil any attempts to fragment it.

Days earlier, Bin-Dagher revealed attempts made by GPC leaders to unify the party and elect a new president.

Among these officials are the relatives of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was killed by the Houthi militia in December.

The “Sanaa branch” of the GPC mocked in its statement some attempts “to speak on behalf of the party or to claim that it is divided.”

This effort has “suspicious goals,” added the statement, stressing that the GPC will continue to be unified.

Those speaking on behalf of the party are not affiliated with it, it stressed.

Pro-GPC activists accused current leaders in Sanaa of “clearly betraying the former president by not implementing his will to fight the Houthis, end the partnership with them and open a new chapter with the Arab Coalition.”

Other activists sought to justify the stances of the Sanaa GPC branch, saying that they are forced to submit to the Houthis out of fear of reprisals. Their positions do not reflect their real convictions.
