Houston (1-2) vs. Tulane (2-1) Game Preview
Why Houston Will Win
The passing game is way past due to break out. It couldn’t do it against Oklahoma and Washington State, and it didn’t need to do anything against Prairie View.
But it’s coming.
D’Eriq King has been okay, but he’s been at his best taking off, with 103 rushing yards and a score against Oklahoma, a big day against Washington State, and with five rushing scores overall. Even though he’s not bombing away, the offense is still moving the ball.
A Dana Holgorsen offense isn’t supposed to be 120th in the nation throwing the ball, but again, it’s overdue. Statistically, the Tulane pass defense has been solid so far with nothing happening down the field, but FIU and SE Missouri State aren’t bombing away – the D isn’t quite as strong as the stats.
The Green Wave won’t generate enough pressure to get to King to bother him, the downfield plays will be there to open up the O a bit, and if not, he’ll just take off.
Why Tulane Will Win
It’s a sharp Green Wave team offensively, even with the problems in the Auburn game that was more of a fight than the Tigers might have liked.
The offensive line isn’t allowing anything in the backfield, there aren’t any big mistakes or turnovers, and the ground game has been magnificent. The O might have only scored six points against Auburn, but it still managed four yards per carry against the terrific defensive front. Against the mediocre teams so far, the Green Wave backs are ripping off yards in chunks.
The modified option offense is getting everyone involved around QB Justin McMillan, who’s taking to the attack and making it fly, throwing for only ten fewer yards than King so far.

What’s Going To Happen
Can Houston really start out 1-3? Yes, because Tulane really is just that good on both sides of the ball.
This is a desperate Cougar team that needs something positive to happen to get the season going, but this will be when the world sees just how solid the Green Wave are. It’s still early, but is this an elimination game for the West title? No, but it’ll be a statement for the Green Wave in a great game.
