Houston police helicopter crashes into apartment block with officers injured

A police helicopter with officers inside has crashed into a block of flats in Houston, Texas.

The aircraft came down at around 2am this morning local time (8am BST).

Two officers who were on board were injured before being airlifted to hospital.

The helicopter was being used as part of an investigation when it crashed into the block of flats.

They were following up reports of a body floating in a creek along the northern portion of the city when the crash occurred.

It is not currently known what condition the two officers are in.

It is not thought that anyone on the ground was injured.

At 3am, while officers were at the crash site, shots were fired on the street.

Three people were taken into custody,  Police Chief Art Acevedo said according to click2houston.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Agency will conduct investigations along with the Houston Police Department.

"I promise you that pilot was doing everything he could not to strike an apartment," PC Acevedo said.

He said that the fact no one was injured on the ground was a 'miracle'.
