Houssem Aouar and Edu's other transfer targets at Arsenal to exploit Ligue 1 financial mess

With the January transfer window coming to a close, Arsenal will start to look ahead towards their business in the summer.

The Gunners placed a heavy focus on trimming their squad of high earners in the mid-season window, with their wage bill over £500k-a-week lighter following the departures of Mesut Ozil, Shkodran Mustafi, Sead Kolasinac and Sokratis.

That should leave Edu with plenty of room to work with in the summer and Arsenal's ears may have been tuned to the concerning news surrounding French football.

The latest attempt from the LFP to sell TV rights to Ligue 1 failed after bids from Amazon, DAZN and Discovery, which fell beneath the reserve price that is said to be necessary for the league to be sustainable.

Maitland-Niles has chance to prove himself at WBA but Arsenal future unsure

A bleak picture has been painted, with the next 48 hours crucial and has been summed up by French football daily L'Equipe as '48 hours to save Ligue 1'.

Several club presidents have told the Financial Times that it could push some clubs into bankruptcy, while many have already started to negotiate wage cuts with players.

While it should serve as a wake up call to European football about the frail nature of the reliance on these TV deals, it opens up opportunities for rival clubs, like Arsenal, to raid the league for talent - and we've picked five players who Edu should be on alert for.

Houssem Aouar

Heavily touted for a move to the Emirates Stadium last summer, Arsenal will face a fierce battle in the market at the end of the season with other top clubs from the continent likely to enter the running for Houssem Aouar.

The general consensus may well have been that Arsenal have missed their best chance to land the 22-year-old but the financial mess in Ligue 1 presents a fresh opportunity for the Gunners, as Aouar's price-tag may be slashed.

It will then fall upon Edu and Arteta to convince Aouar of the project in north London and why England's capital is the best destination ahead of Turin, Madrid, Manchester or others.

Eduardo Camavinga

Widely regarded as one of the finest young players in world football, Eduardo Camavinga has already been linked with a host of European giants.

Just 18-years-old, Manchester United and Real Madrid are among the clubs vying for the teenager's services and a crucial part of negotiations for a transfer could come down to guarantees of playing time.

He could propel Arsenal's rebuild, slotting in at centre-midfield in an area that is likely to be of focus this summer with Dani Ceballos latest loan stint coming to an end.

Jonathan David

A transfer target for Arsenal during his time with Gent, prior to moving to Lille last summer, Jonathan David may become available again and could attract interest from Edu.

With Alexandre Lacazette's contract situation uncertain and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the wrong side of 30, a new striker could be on the agenda for Arsenal and the signing of the Canada international would also boost the club's profile in north America.

Having scored 18 goals and contributed seven assists in the league for Gent last season, David has found things tricky in France having netted just four times in 22 appearances.

Bruno Guimaraes

Another name that will be familiar to Arsenal fans, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes joined Lyon last January following interest from other clubs, including that of the Gunners.

The 23-year-old has been a regular for Lyon this term, missing just three league matches, and has seen his stock rise in the process.

Like the aforementioned Camavinga, he could easily slot into Arsenal's midfield as a long-term partner for Thomas Partey.

Sven Botman

Arsenal's options at centre-half have been cut significantly following the exits of Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi. While it is an area where the Gunners were bloated, a potential exit for David Luiz this summer and the uncertain future of Calum Chambers leaves Arsenal perhaps limited.

21-year-old Sven Botman could be the ideal target, providing a long-term option at the heart of defence and bolstering a young contingent at centre-back that includes Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba and Omar Rekik.

Adding Botman to that quota, with Rob Holding also included, would see Arsenal boast significant depth in a position that has been a long-term concern for the Gunners.
