Housing plan near Pilkington glass factory opposed by angry residents

Furious residents have largely opposed a plan to build houses on green space.

The application is for 76 new homes to be built on the grounds of Pilkington's old head office on Prescot Road, south of Alexandra Park.

The land is currently green space, sparking outrage at the prospect of it being urbanised, with some residents claiming that 66 trees have already been felled on the land.

The plans are for 16 one-bed apartments, 18 two-bed apartments, 22 two-bed homes and 20 three-bed houses with parking, and landscaping.

The application was put forward by construction group The Sovini Group.

One resident said: "The issue is they’ve already felled 66 near mature trees. If we let every developer think they can get away this we would have no green space"

On the official application on the St Helens Council website, the planning application has 10 objections

Some of the reasons for objection include increased traffic congestion, increased carbon emissions, and higher likelihood of accidents.

Local councillor Trisha Long is among those to object the plans, in a letter to the planning committee, she said: "As a regular user of Prescot Road I am concerned that the addition of 76 new homes will result in additional congestion on a busy road.

"The mixture of pedestrian and vehicle traffic feels like an accident waiting to happen."

One resident said: "Yeah great idea, fill every space with houses while you're at it cut down every tree and get rid of every grassy area and fill them with houses."

However, not all of the reaction to the plans has been negative, with some residents seeing the positives in the plans.

One person said: "Be great if they where for renters at affordable rent and family bungalows for disabled with a family member."

While another said: "Local councils getting almost £60 million to clean up brown fields, so great."
