The first phase of one of the biggest housing developments for Forces veterans built in London in decades has opened.

About 70 properties in Morden will be offered to veterans on renewable tenancies at 60 per cent of commercial rates.

The eco-friendly flats — boasting solar panels and electric car charging points — will be a “stepping stone” for veterans and their families.

The first of the development’s seven blocks, funded by the Haig Housing Trust and the Veterans Accommodation Fund, is named in honour of Gurkha Kulbir Thapa Magar VC — the first Nepalese Gurkha recipient of the Victoria Cross for his bravery during the First World War.

The six other blocks — set for completion in October — will be named after the Queen and other military heroes.
