Housing association’s day of fun and facts

Residents at a local housing association have enjoyed a day out in Stanley.

The sun shone for Kingdom Housing Association’s summer gathering at the Active Kids Adventure Park last week.

Families were able to make the most of the weather and children were able to spend the day playing at the free event, which was co-hosted by the housing association and Perth and Kinross Council.

Representatives from Fairfield Housing Cooperative and other local agencies were also on hand throughout the day, and guests got some lunch and the chance to discuss how they could participate in and influence the decisions their landlord makes.

They also received useful information from local exhibitors and heard an update on Kingdom’s participating budgeting scheme, ‘choices’.

This scheme gives residents a choice on how to spend money from a dedicated fund to support ideas that will improve their communities.

After lunch, there was a trip to visit nearby Stanley Mills as well for those who didn’t want to spend the rest of the afternoon at the adventure park.

The historic mills on the banks of the River Tay was a powerhouse for producing textiles for over two centuries.

Continuing on the theme of weaving, Max Scotto, Kingdom’s tenant participation officer, then led a workshop on designing a new tartan to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Kingdom Housing Association.

He said the children in particular loved finding out more about how tartan is made, and got the chance to put pen to paper to create their own designs for the tartan.

Purple and grey were the popular choice of colours, along with touches of green, blue and red.

Although the tartan design is not yet finished, residents will be able to take part in the project in the coming months, before a public vote at the end of the year to choose and officially register the housing association’s own tartan.

George Duncan, a scrutiny panel member from Denbeath, said: “The gathering this year was amazing.

“It was very well organised, relaxed and interesting.

“It was good to meet with people from other areas and to have activities for all age groups.”

And Stephanie Watson, a tenant from Cairneyhill, also said: “My daughter and I had a great day and we will be back on the next one.

“We enjoyed looking at colours and designs for the Kingdom tartan too.”
