Houses flooded and cars submerged as rain batters Britain days before Christmas

Houses have been flooded and cars remain trapped in water across parts of Wales as torrential rain continues to batter the region today.

Rain continued throughout yesterday afternoon and, by the evening, homes had started to fill with water and cars were left submerged in the flood water, reports WalesOnline.

Several cars have been seen attempting to drive through streets filled with water in areas such as Roath, while homes have been flooded in Penarth. Parts of Cardiff, Newport and the Vale of Glamorgan have also been badly affected.

While emergency services are trying to aid drivers move vehicles, other people are trying to clear water out of their homes as rain continues to pour in Wales.

Videos of Newport city centre are circulating showing areas that have been severely flooded. One woman, who asked not to be named, quickly collected some sandbags to try and protect her parents' home.

After seeing the flooding was escalating quickly, she decided to do all she could to help in case the weather gets worse.

She said: "My parents are fine. Their house hasn't flooded, but if the rain continues tonight and the council or Welsh water aren't quick enough, then they could.

"There are houses further down the street that unfortunately aren't so lucky. This happens every year when we have bad rain, and I just go down to show some support, but this is the worst it's ever been.

"It has gotten worse and even tailing around into the street opposite."

A couple who live in Penarth had to watch their property fill with water. They were pictured on Wednesday trying to clear water out of their house after heavy rain hit the area.

Pictures show water covering the floor as they stand in their wellies trying to sweep the water out of the house.

It's also been reported that some staff at Llandough Hospital have been trapped as a result of the floods. Some team members have reportedly become stuck in an antenatal clinic as cars have become trapped.

Tractors are trying to help vehicles that have become stuck, while others are waiting for help.

Whitchurch and Tongwynlais councillors also issued the following advice to residents in the local areas: "The council is dealing with surface water flooding across the city.

"The rain has filled up the brooks and streams which are now higher than the outfalls. This means the drains can’t empty and are consequently backing up."

Natural Resources Wales said it was aware of reports of flooding in the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff and that teams have been sent to investigate.

South Wales Police said: "We've had reports of flooded roads across our area. Take care - only travel if essential and never drive through flood water."
