A woman has suffered severe burns after a suspected gas explosion on a residential street.

Cadent gas engineers were seen entering an address on the corner of Thomaston Street and Anderson Street.

One resident said despite there having been a gas explosion she didn't hear a bang.

She told the ECHO : "There was a gas explosion sometime this morning in one of the houses just around the corner.

"Police, fire and ambulances have been outside on the street for hours.

"I didn't hear what happened. There wasn't a loud bang or anything.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and Merseyside Police confirmed they were called to the street at 9.10 am on Thursday.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing but there is currently no suggestion that the cause of the explosion was suspicious.

"One woman has received severe burns to her body and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

"Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended with three engines and administered first aid at the scene.

"The building has been declared as unsafe at this time and CADENT are in attendance at the scene and have turned the gas supply off to make the area safe.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing."
