Houses torched in arson attacks were seized under unexplained wealth laws

The Goodwood house was boarded up after this week's arson attack.

Hobart detectives believe two arson attacks involving houses seized under laws aimed at tackling organised crime are linked.

Both houses were insured and were being sold by the Department of Justice.

Police believe accelerant was used to destroy a vacant house in Goodwood overnight on Thursday.

The house was one of two forfeited to the Crown in April using unexplained wealth legislation.

The second property in West Moonah is still the subject of an arson investigation after a fire on June 21.

Detective Acting Sergeant Ricki Eaves said the properties were owned by the same person and had been forfeited because they were purchased through profits of crime.

There was no indication as to why they were targeted by arsonists, but police believe they know the identity of the perpetrators.

"Due to the circumstances and the co-incidence that both of these houses were attacked we are led to believe there's potential involvement from associates of the previous owners," he said.

Investigators will review CCTV footage from the area and have appealed to the public for information.

Prospective buyers at the Goodwood property today had to be turned away.

The houses are the third properties which have been acquired through the state's unexplained wealth laws which were introduced in March 2014.

In 2015-16, cash and assets worth more than $1 million were seized.

The laws are now being reviewed by former state and federal Director of Public Prosecutions Damian Bugg to assess their effectiveness.
