Houseplant of the week: zebra basket vine

zebra basket vine

Why will I love it?
With its bold, patterned foliage, the zebra basket vine (Aeschynanthus marmoratus) is nature’s version of a fashion statement. This trailing stunner’s leaves are dark green, with light green zebra-like stripes complemented by reddish-maroon undersides.

Light or shade?
It thrives in bright, indirect light, which enhances the vibrant pattern on its leaves. It can tolerate medium light conditions, though the markings may be less pronounced. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves and cause unsightly brown spots.

Where should I put it?
It’s well suited for hanging baskets or a high shelf in a living room, where its trailing vines can cascade gracefully, and bathrooms offer the humidity this plant loves.

How do I keep it alive?
Water it thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid letting it get soggy. Regular misting or a humidity tray can keep it happy, especially in drier indoor environments. Maintain a room temperature of 18-24C.

Did you know …
It belongs to the same family as the lipstick plant. Originating from south-east Asia, it is an epiphyte in the wild, often growing on trees.
