Houseplant of the week: velvet-leaf philodendron

The velvet-leaf philodendron in a clay pot.

Why will I love it?
The cascading vines of Philodendron hederaceum ‘Micans’ are adorned with rich, velvety leaves that bring an understated opulence to any space. Its leaves, a lush green with a coppery sheen, add a touch of sophistication to your indoor jungle. Beyond aesthetics, it’s a resilient plant, forgiving of occasional neglect.

Light or shade?
This philodendron appreciates bright, indirect light, which enhances the vibrancy of its foliage.

Where should I put it?
Find a spot with filtered sunlight or place it slightly away from a south- or west-facing window to shield it from direct rays. Its trailing nature makes it an excellent choice for bookcases, high shelves or hanging planters.

How do I keep it alive?
Water moderately, allowing the top inch of the soil to dry between watering sessions. It isn’t a fan of soggy roots, so ensure proper drainage. It likes a warm environment, ideally between 18C and 26C, and to be shielded from drafts. During the spring and summer growing season feed the plant every four to six weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser.

Did you know …
This not just a visual treat; it’s also an air-purifying champion that helps to filter out pollutants. It is native to parts of Central America and the Caribbean.
