Houseplant of the week: tropical pitcher plant

Nepenthe tropical carnivore plant on an white background;

Why will I love it?
The tropical pitcher plant (Nepenthes) is one of nature’s marvels. With its alluring pitchers – ranging from dainty to grandiose – in an array of colours, this carnivorous wonder is a touch high-maintenance but as beautiful as it is fascinating.

Light or shade?
This exotic plant prospers in bright, indirect light. It’s crucial to mimic the sunlight of its native, relatively sparse, forest canopy. So while some direct morning sunlight can be beneficial, too much can scorch the plant.

Where should I put it?
These tropical natives thrive in high humidity (90%) and warm temperatures (20C to 30C). Hang in a well-lit bathroom or kitchen, where the humidity tends to be higher.

How do I keep it alive?
Keeping it hydrated is key. Aim for moist but not soggy soil. Use distilled rainwater or reverse osmosis water to avoid the buildup of harmful minerals found in tap water. The soil mixture should be light and airy, comprising ingredients like coconut coir, orchid bark, perlite and sphagnum moss. Mist often.

Did you know …
More than 100 distinct species of the Nepenthes genus are to be found in south-east Asia, India and northern Australia.
