Why will I love it?
The rex begonia vine (Cissus discolor), is a dramatic addition to any indoor garden, its spectacular heart-shaped foliage boasting an array of silver, green, and purple hues. A velvety texture adds a tactile dimension to its visual splendour. The vine’s climbing/trailing nature makes it a living piece of art, perfect for creating vertical green displays in your home.
Light or shade?
This vine thrives in indirect light; a spot near a window with a sheer curtain would be ideal.
Where should I put it?
As it’s a climber, providing it with a moss pole will encourage vertical growth. Consider placing it in a room with high humidity, like a bathroom with natural light, or use a humidifier to recreate the moisture levels of its tropical habitat.
How do I keep it alive?
Consistent moisture is key – water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, but be cautious not to overwater as this can lead to root rot. A well-draining potting mix will help keep the roots healthy. Feed it with a balanced fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Regular pruning will keep it bushy and full. The ideal temperature is between 15C and 27C. It prefers a consistent temperature, so keep it away from drafts and heating sources to avoid sudden temperature changes.
Did you know…
The rex begonia isn’t a true begonia; it belongs to the grape family Vitaceae, which is evident in its tendrils and the way it climbs. It’s native to south-east Asia’s rainforests.
