Houseplant of the week: Philodendron mayoi

Philodendron Mayoi in white ceramic pot

Why will I love it?
The Philodendron mayoi, with its distinctive, deeply pinnate leaves resembling those of a fern, offers a lush, tropical aesthetic without the upkeep required of ferns.

Light or shade?
Philodendron mayoi thrives in moderate to bright indirect light. While it’s pretty forgiving, placing it in a spot that mimics its natural rainforest habitat will encourage vigorous growth and the development of its unique leaf shape. In contrast, too little light can cause it to become leggy and sparse.

Where should I put it?
It thrives in warm, humid environments, making it ideal for bright bathrooms and kitchens. Its climbing nature makes it a striking addition to shelves and plant stands, where its elegant foliage can be showcased.

How do I keep it alive?
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, typically once a week. Regular misting or a pebble tray can help meet its humidity needs. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every month during the growing season. Prune any leggy or dead stems to maintain a bushy appearance.

Did you know …
Named after Brazilian botanist Dr Simon Mayo, the plant is effective in purifying indoor air by removing pollutants such as formaldehyde.
