Why will I love it?
Banana trees are a tropical staple that bring a touch of the jungle to any home or garden. These fast-growing plants are known for their large, paddle-shaped leaves and delicious fruit (though you won’t get that even indoors in this country). But banana plants can be tricky, so it’s essential to understand what they need in terms of care and light.
Light or shade?
Bright, indirect light.
Where should I put it?
A banana plant prefers a warm, humid spot such as a room with a large window facing east or west.
How do I keep it alive?
Banana plants need to be kept moist but not waterlogged. They should be watered when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. They also appreciate humidity, so consider placing a tray of water nearby or using a humidifier. They will grow in lower light, but their leaves may be smaller and appear less vibrant. Banana plants must also be protected from cold as they are not frost-tolerant; they will die if exposed to temperatures below 10C.
Did you know …
The banana plant is not a tree but one of Earth’s biggest herbs – and closely related to ginger.
