Why will I love it?
What’s not to like about a plant that can be grown from a millennial breakfast staple? Growing an avocado plant (Persea americana) from the seed we usually throw away will let you witness the magic of propagation. (Suspend the stone over a jar of water until it sprouts, then plant in compost.) Its vibrant green leaves grow on a solitary stem, creating a majestic and calming presence.
Light or shade?
Avocado plants thrive in bright, indirect light, which encourages robust growth and large, symmetrical foliage.
Where should I put it?
You can grow your plant in water in a specially designed elegant glass vase or in good old compost. Either way, place it near a south- or west-facing window to ensure it gets enough sun.
How do I keep it alive?
Keep it consistently moist when in soil, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering frequency. Avocado plants appreciate humidity, and temperatures of 20-25C.
Did you know …
An avocado plant will develop into an evergreen tree that should last several years. Native to Central America, it was revered by the Aztecs for its mystical and aphrodisiac properties.
