Householders warned they could face £1,000 fines for not changing their address

Moving home can be a stressful experience at the best of times but the added tasks that go with it can also be a challenge.

After settling into your new abode, homeowners and renters also have a number of administrative tasks to change the addresses on all of their household bill accounts.

Updating your details with the DVLA is also a must - otherwise you risk a potential fine of £1,000 for not updating the address on your driving licence. This could also invalidate your car insurance.

Alerting the local authority you pay council tax to of your move should also be at the top of your list/ Failing to pay council tax could lead to court proceedings.

Barratt London collected search data to explore the most searched questions surrounding moving house.

They found some of the most searched terms around moving home included the following:

  • Council tax when moving house
  • Changing address when moving house
  • Who to inform when moving house

A spokesperson said: "Be sure to speak to your gas, electric, water and internet providers to let them know you’re moving so you can resolve any last payments on your current property and start paying the right amount for your new one.

"When moving house, you are faced with the pain-staking task of updating everything with your new address. This will include bank cards, licenses, GPs and even your Amazon account."
