Housebuilder helps those most in need with generous donation to East Kilbride food bank

A leading housebuilder has helped those most in need with a donation to an East Kilbride food bank.

Barratt Homes, the UK’s leading sustainable housebuilder, has donated £2000 to food banks in the west of Scotland, to support to those in need.

This includes EK Community Food Bank which received £1000 along with BASICSfood Bank which has distribution outlets in Motherwell, Wishaw and Airdrie.

During the pandemic it partnered with the council and other charities within the town to help support the calls being received through the council's wellbeing line.

While the food bank has had to cease some of their operations due to government regulations, the support of volunteers has allowed them to continue serving the community with 117 per cent more bags and food parcels being distributed.

Recently they have launched recipe kits, containing ingredients and recipe cards for those receiving food parcels to help encourage home cooking.

Karen Dornan, who runs EK Community Food Bank said: “We are very grateful for the generous donation from Barratt Homes to continue the work we are carrying out in the community.

“This money will be invaluable in allowing us to continue to provide our new recipe kits and help with general purchasing of items we require.

“A heartfelt thank you for their support.”

Suzanne Craven, finance director at Barratt Homes West Scotland, said: “The last few months have been a busy and challenging time and the work the food banks are carrying out is incredibly important.

We know they have had to adapt and scale up due to the current circumstances, with many in the local community depending on them. We’re very pleased to be able to support both food banks with their respective donations.”

Now in its second year, the Barratt Homes Community Fund has pledged to donate £1000 each month to a charity or organisation in the west of Scotland.

Charities are nominated and voted for by employees of Barratt Homes and the focus for the fund continues to be on organisations that improve the quality of life for those living in the area.
