House price madness: How unaffordable are homes where you live?

Prospective homeowners in parts of Wales would need to borrow more than 10 times the average income to be able to afford a house - see how your neighbourhood compares.

Exclusive analysis of government figures compares average household income in each neighbourhood (areas of about 7,200 people) with the average house prices there.

In one neighbourhood in Gwynedd, the tip of the Llyn peninsula which includes the exclusive housing area of Abersoch, the average family would need to borrow 10.3 times the local average yearly income to afford a home - making it the least affordable area in Wales. While the average net household income in the area is a healthy £28,100 a year, the average house sold for a whopping £290,000 in the year to September 2019.

Meanwhile, a house in one neighbourhood in Blaenau Gwent, the most affordable in Wales, could be bought for 2.7 times the average household income. This area includes Six Bells and St Illtyd, near Abertillery. The average net household income is £23,700 a year, and the median house price is just £65,000.
