House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere explained: New character, shocking deaths, the Antlered Man, and the mystery of the Isle of Faces

HBO's House of the Dragon Season 3 has officially premiered, delivering one of the most spectacular battles in the franchise so far. The opening episode features the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, a major character death, and a mysterious appearance that has sparked intense discussion among fans of George R.R. Martin's lore.

House of the Dragon Season 3 debuted on June 21, 2026. Episode 2 is scheduled to release on June 28, while Episode 3 will air on July 5.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Premiere: Major Character Deaths Explained

The Battle of the Gullet, fought between forces aligned with Dragonstone and Driftmark, serves as the centerpiece of the premiere. The massive naval confrontation leaves devastating losses on both sides as dragons, ships and soldiers clash in one of the bloodiest battles of the Targaryen civil war.

One of the episode's biggest casualties is Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett), Rhaenyra Targaryen's eldest son and one of the Blacks' most important dragon riders. Jacaerys is killed during the battle, while his dragon Vermax also perishes.

Another major death is Sharako Lohar (Abigail Thorn), who is killed by Alyn of Hull during the conflict.

Which Characters Survived the Battle of the Gullet?

While several key figures survive, many emerge severely weakened.

Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) suffers heavy losses as much of his fleet is destroyed during the battle. Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall), meanwhile, disappears amid the chaos and is presumed dead after going missing.

What Is the Isle of Faces in House of the Dragon?

One of the most talked-about moments in the episode occurs when dragonseeds Ulf the White, Hugh Hammer and Addam of Hull find themselves on the mysterious Isle of Faces while waiting to ambush Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar near Harrenhal.

Located at the center of the God's Eye lake, the Isle of Faces is one of the most sacred and mysterious locations in Westeros. The island is home to ancient weirwood trees and is closely tied to the Dawn Age.

According to Westerosi history, it was here that the First Men and the Children of the Forest ended their long war and forged a peace agreement beneath the weirwoods. Because of its sacred status, very few people have visited the island, making it one of the least explored locations in George R.R. Martin's world.

Who Was the Antlered Man in House of the Dragon Season 3?

The mystery deepens when Ulf encounters a black goat, a creature previously associated with Alys Rivers and Daemon Targaryen's visions at Harrenhal.

Soon afterward, Hugh and Addam notice their dragons becoming uneasy. They spot a tall figure with antlers and goat-like features watching them from the forest before disappearing.

Many fans believe the figure is one of the Green Men, a legendary order said to protect the Isle of Faces, the weirwood trees and the Children of the Forest following the ancient war with the First Men.

Stories about the Green Men vary throughout Westeros. Some legends describe them as beings with antlers and green skin, while others claim they simply wear antlered headdresses and green robes. The show's brief glimpse leaves the mystery unresolved.

Did House of the Dragon Confirm the Green Men?

The scene appears to reference George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood.

In the book, Addam of Hull is said to have landed on the Isle of Faces with his dragon Seasmoke and met one of the Green Men. By featuring the antlered figure, the series may have confirmed the existence of the legendary guardians within the show's canon.

How Is the Isle of Faces Connected to Game of Thrones?

The Isle of Faces shares deep connections with the Children of the Forest, who later appear in *Game of Thrones* during Bran Stark's journey beyond the Wall in search of the Three-Eyed Raven.

Many fan theories suggest the Green Men helped preserve the ancient traditions of the old gods and protected the Children of the Forest through the centuries.

Although the Battle of the Gullet dominates the Season 3 premiere, the appearance of the antlered figure could become one of the episode's most important lore revelations.

Who Is Ormund Hightower in House of the Dragon Season 3?

Season 3 also introduces Ormund Hightower, played by *Happy Valley* star James Norton.

Ormund was first mentioned in Season 2 as a powerful Hightower commander marching from Oldtown. In the premiere, he receives a message from King Aemond Targaryen instructing him to await further orders before their forces unite.

In George R.R. Martin's lore, Ormund Hightower is the nephew of Otto Hightower and cousin to Alicent Hightower and Gwayne Hightower. His arrival is expected to play a significant role as the Dance of the Dragons escalates.
