House Of The Dragon Season 2 Premieres June 16 On HBO

House of the Dragon's season 1

Game of Thrones fans were treated to a double delight on Thursday, March 21, with HBO unveiling two trailers for the highly anticipated second season of the prequel series, House of the Dragon. The network has set the stage for viewers to pick a side following the death of Viserys I Targaryen in season 1: Team Targaryen or Team Hightower?

The trailers showcase the black faction led by Rhaenyra and Prince Daemon on Dragonstone, and the green team of Alicent, Otto, King Aegon, and Prince Aemond. The upcoming season will delve into the Targaryen civil war, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

In the season 1 finale, Aemond's actions trigger an impending war in Westeros, with Rhaenyra and Alicent rallying their allies and dragons for an inevitable clash. Aegon asserts his claim to the throne, while Rhaenyra fights for her rightful inheritance as Viserys' chosen successor.

The trailers hint at a return to Winterfell, the ancestral home of the Starks, now under the rule of Cregan Stark in the prequel series. House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, chronicling the history of House Targaryen.

The first season of the series garnered nearly 10 million viewers, making it HBO's most-watched series premiere. Despite being nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2023 Emmys, it lost to Succession. Game of Thrones, the original series, clinched the award four times.

Excitingly, there are reports of additional spinoffs in the works for Game of Thrones enthusiasts. However, the anticipation for the sixth book in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, 'Winds of Winter,' continues as it has been in progress for over a decade.

Martin candidly acknowledged the delay, stating, 'I’m 12 years late with Winds of Winter, as we know. I’m just going to put it right out there. You guys don’t have to pester me about it.'

House of the Dragon season 2 is set to premiere on Sunday, June 16, on HBO and Max at 9 p.m. ET.
