A newGame of Thrones prequel series has been ordered by HBO, the home of the original fantasy epic.
House of the Dragon, which is based on George RR Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, has been ordered as a full series at the network just hours after news broke that HBO decided not to pick up another prequel series starring Naomi Watts.
The new show will be set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and will tell the story of House Targaryen.
House of the Dragon, which is co-created by George RR Martin and Ryan Condal, comprises 10 episodes.
Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik will work on the pilot and additional episodes.
“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories,” said HBO president of programming Casey Bloys. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”
The aforementioned prequel pilot starring Watts was due to be set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. Having originally been commissioned in 2018, it was cancelled on Tuesday.
