House of Fraser enjoys record Christmas sales

Christmas delight: House of Fraser in Oxford Street had its best ever festive season

House of Fraser today posted record Christmas results, with its Oxford Street store enjoying its best festive season.

The department store followed rivals John Lewis and Next in reporting a strong festive season, with like for like sales growing 7.1 per cent in the eight weeks to 2 January. This included a record Christmas week and a sales rise on Boxing Day of 27 per cent.

It also had a 33 per cent rise in sales for its house labels, such as Linea, Kenneth Cole, New & Lingwood, Howick and Episode. Women's fashion accessories were up 20 per cent and menswear up 12 per cent.

John King, chief executive, said the performance reflected efforts to improve the business such as store refurbishment and developing own-brand products.

"It was pleasing that we had our biggest ever Christmas week and Boxing Day, with some of our stores, such as Oxford Street, experiencing their strongest ever performance."
