House of Fraser at Cabot Circus evacuated as shopper heard saying 'I'm getting out of here'

House of Fraser at Cabot Circus in Bristol was evacuated yesterday (Saturday, September 17), according to a shopper in the centre. No immediate details were given on the reason behind the evacuation but it is believed to have been related to a fire drill.

Mike Shawe was in Cabot Circus when he said that House of Fraser 'advised people to leave the store owing to an emergency' at around 4pm yesterday. He said that initially "no details as to why were given".

He then added that he believed it was a "fire alarm activation". The store closed at around 4pm, before reopening to shoppers at around 4.15pm.

Mike said: The announcement to clear the store was very clear, and soon security were on hand to usher customers out. I was leaving the store and a buggy ran into my heels from behind, the woman pushing it seemed mildly panicked. ‘This is an emergency, could all customers leave the store immediately’ said the announcement.

"When I was outside I spoke with a lady who had left in front of us. She said ‘I’m getting out of here’. Staff at first locked themselves inside the store, and then were outside of the doors, they seemed to be on their radios chatting to others.

"Overall it was well managed and instructions to customers was clear and concise."

Cabot Circus and House of Fraser have been contacted for further comment.
