House of Commons backs Leeds MP Hilary Benn's bill to block no-deal Brexit

MPs have voted to back a bill - proposed by Leeds MP Hilary Benn - which will block PM Boris Johnson's Brexit plans.

Members voted by 329 to 300 in favour of the bill - which will force PM Boris Johnson to seek an extension to the October 31 Brexit deadline if a deal is not agreed with the EU.

The move comes after Tory rebels and Opposition MPs and won a vote on Tuesday allowing them to take control of Parliament and set out their bill.

Leeds Central MP and chair of the Brexit Select Committee Hilary Benn told the House of Commons today: "The bill has wide cross-party support and is backed by members who have very different views on how the matter of Brexit should be concluded.

"What unites us is a conviction that there is no mandate for no deal and the consequences for the economy and the country would be highly damaging."

Now the bill has been passed it will go to the Lords for approval on Thursday.

If the Lords pass any amendments it will have to return to the Commons for approval then receive Royal Assent from the Queen providing it survives this stage.
