House in Grangetown, Cardiff, 'gutted' by fire which broke out overnight

Firefighters have battled a large fire overnight which has left a Cardiff property “gutted”.

The blaze broke out shortly before 4am on Saturday, January 2, at a terraced house in the Grangetown area of the city.

Fire crews and police officers attended the scene of the fire, which started in the ground floor of a property on the corner of Cornwall Street and Sussex Street.

The Welsh Ambulance Service was also called but the three occupants of the house were all accounted for and nobody suffered any serious injuries.

Images captured at the scene do however reveal the scale of the damage caused to the ground floor of the two-storey property with tape placed across the entrance to the house. One passer-by said the house looked as if it had been totally “gutted” by the fire.

“It looks like it was quite a large fire and the whole property looks pretty gutted,” he said.

“Police and the fire service were still at the scene this morning when I walked past and you could tell just from outside that the damage is quite extensive.”

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to reports of a house fire on Cornwall Street in Grangetown, Cardiff, at 3.58am on Saturday morning.

“The ground floor was well alight but there were no persons trapped and everyone was accounted for. The fire was extinguished by 4.35am by crews from Cardiff Central and Ely.”

The spokesman added that fire investigators were at the property on Saturday morning to try to determine the cause of the blaze.
