House fire that left woman fighting for her life is no longer being treated as suspicious

Police have confirmed that they are no longer treating a house fire that has left a 28-year-old woman fighting for her life as suspicious.

And a 26-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has been released from police custody.

He was arrested as part of the investigation into the house fire on Tyntyla Road, Tonypandy on Tuesday (Sept 21) but have confirmed no further action is being taken against him.

A spokesman for the force said: "The incident no longer treated as suspicious. He has been released from police custody.

"Investigating officers are not looking for anybody else in connection with the incident."

He added that the woman remains in Swansea's Morriston Hospital where her condition is described as critical. Three children were also treated for smoke inhalation after the fire.

Police were alerted to reports of a house fire at about 4.45pm on Tuesday, September 21.

South Wales Fire and Rescue and the Welsh Ambulance Service also attended the scene to bring the fire under control.

One neighbour Elwydd Jeffrey said, "I've never seen such black smoke, it was awful. I could hardly see through the window because the smoke was so dense."

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Lewis, said: “This is a terribly sad and tragic incident which has left a young woman fighting for her life in hospital.

“Extensive enquiries which have been made over the past few days have enabled us to arrive at the conclusion that the fire was not the result of a criminal act.

"Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with the woman in hospital and her family."
