House fire in Kingsdown sparks huge emergency response

A fire broke out in a ground floor flat in Kingsdown this morning (September 28).

Avon Fire and Rescue Service was called to a fire on St Michael’s Hill which had engulfed the kitchen at 9:39am.

Crews from Temple Fire Station were sent to extinguish the fire, with the cause thought to be accidental.

A witness told Bristol Live that he saw the fire crew arriving at around 9:50am, adding: "There were two fire trucks there blocking the road just near the Highbury Vaults on St Michael’s Hill".

Maps showed very heavy traffic in the area at the time, with the Bristol University precinct and Cotham congested.

The dramatic scene required two firefighters to use breathing apparatuses in order to extinguish the blaze.

One firefighter used a high-pressure hose reel and the other used a covering jet to ensure the fire was completely out.

Firefighters then proceeded to check the property, using gas monitors to check the safety of the building, and positive pressure ventilation fans to vent the heavy smoke.

There were no injuries to residents either in the flat where the fire occurred or in surrounding properties.

Crews also checked neighbouring buildings and all were declared safe.

Firefighters gave fire safety advice to residents, and left the scene at 10:24am, around 45 minutes after they were called to the emergency.
