House extensively damaged after arson attack in Omagh

Police are appealing for information after an arson attack on a house in Omagh in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The fire was extinguished at the house on Meelmore drive in the Co Tyrone town, with "extensive damage" being caused to the property.

A police spokesperson said no one was harmed in the blaze as the house was empty at the time but added it is believed to have been started deliberately.

A person from a neighbouring property had to be evacuated from their home as a result.

"Detectives are appealing for information following a fire at a house in the Meelmore Drive area of Omagh in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday August 17."

The PSNI spokesperson said: "The report was received just before 3.30am. Police attended along with colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, who extinguished the blaze.

“The house was unoccupied so, thankfully, no one was harmed. The property has, however, been extensively damaged, and the occupant of an adjoining property had to be evacuated.

“At this stage, it is believed the fire was started deliberately and is being treated as arson.

“I am appealing to anyone with information, or who noticed any suspicious activity, to contact us on 101, quoting reference 133 of 17/08/21.”
