House 'engulfed in flames' with two people inside after firework thrown through window in north Dublin

A north Dublin man had a lucky escape after his house was "engulfed in flames" when a firework was thrown through his window.

The horror scenes unfolded at a house on Wellington Street Upper, Dublin 7 on Sunday night.

It's understood there were two people in the house at the time.

The man, who is the homeowner, heard a loud bang and went in to his living room to find it ablaze after the explosive had been chucked through the window.

Dublin Fire Brigade raced to the scene and managed to get the two occupants out of the house unharmed but extensive damage has been done to the home.

A garda spokeswoman told Dublin Live they are investigating the matter as a case of criminal damage.

She said: "Gardaí in Mountjoy are investigating an incident of criminal damage by fire to a house on Wellington Street Upper, on the evening of Sunday 27 September, 2020. 

"The owner of the home heard a loud bang and entered his front living room which was engulfed in flames. 

"No persons were injured during the incident but extensive damage was done to the house. Investigations ongoing."

A Dublin Fire Brigade spokeswoman said: "Dublin Fire Brigade received a 999 call reporting a house on fire on Upper Wellington Street, City Centre, at approximately 19.30 hours on Sunday.

"Firefighters from Phibsborough and Townsend Street Fire Stations responded to the call. The fire was brought under control at 19.45 hours. There were no injuries reported."
