House devastated by fire after 'huge explosion' heard in Scots town

A "huge explosion" was heard in a Scots town as fire crews raced to garage fire.

Emergency services were called to Goremire Road in Carluke at about 9.20pm last night after a blaze was reported.

Locals reported hearing a "loud bang" followed by a glow in the sky in the town.

Four fire appliances rushed to the incident, with firefighters attempting to extinguish the blaze overnight.

Pictures taken this morning at the scene show a garage connected to the house completely burnt out, with the house also severely damaged by the flames.

Three cars sit in the drive which look to be smoke damaged, and the area has been cordoned off by the fire service.

A local resident who witnessed the fire told the Record: "Fire investigation remains ongoing as to nature of the explosion and fireball observed in neighbouring town four miles away.

"House and two cars totalled, and thankfully no paramedics on-site which would imply no tragedy."

One fire appliance remains on-scene this morning, with one neighbour suspecting that it was a gas-related explosion.

They wrote on Facebook: "It was the house next door to mine. I'm away at a camp with kids but husband called me last night.

"Three fire engines were still there at 4am this morning at things still hadn't settled down.

"Suspecting gas explosion in garage, 3 cars burnt out. I don't think my husband, who was at home, has slept much."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman confirmed that they were still in attendance in Carluke.

She said: "We were called out to an incident at 9.21pm and sent out four appliances.

"We still have one in attendance, it was a garage on fire.

"We used a hose-reel jet and there were no casualties."

Police Scotland also confirmed they had attended the scene to help with traffic management.

They were approached for further comment about whether it was being treated as suspicious.
