The Bangkok North Kwaeng Court on Wednesday sentenced a motorcycle messenger to one month's house arrest and confiscated his bike for riding on a pavement and hitting a schoolgirl on Lat Phrao Road, Bangkok, last November.

Phuwadol Srisamrong, 23, confessed he had avoided heavy road congestion by speeding on the pavement without due care for public safety and without sending a warning signal to pedestrians.

The term was halved from two months because of his confession. House arrest means that he would not be imprisoned but confined to a place -- which could be his own residence -- with an electronic monitoring tag.

Public prosecutors earlier told the court that Phuwadol was riding his motorcycle on the pavement near a bus stop and the mouth of Soi Lat Phrao 69 in Wang Thonglang district during the day on Nov 26 when he hit the student from Bodindecha 3 School. The bike knocked her down and she suffered hip pain and leg abrasions.

The court released Phuwadol on bail of 18,000 baht pending his appeal.
