Hour-long bus queues after crash causes traffic chaos in Birkenhead Tunnel

Commuters are facing hour-long queues after a crash caused mayhem for rush hour traffic heading out of the city centre.

Passengers waiting to catch the bus home to Wirral were stuck in queues snaking down the street as services were hit by severe delays.

Arriva North West tweeted to say a crash had caused "severe delays" to all services at the busiest time of the day.

Merseytravel confirmed this, tweeting to inform passengers: "There has been an incident in the Birkenhead Tunnel which is affecting Wirral bus services at present.

"These services are subject to delay and cancellation and we advise customers to go to Sir Thomas Street at present."

However, the Better Roads account run by Liverpool City Council suggested another crash outside the tunnel may be contributing to the lengthy delays.

They tweeted saying: "Due to a road traffic collision at the junction of Islington/St Anne Street outbound, lanes 1 + 2 are currently blocked

"Emergency Services are in attendance.

"Please be patient if you are in the area."

Merseytravel appeared to later confirm this and tweeted: "There's a road traffic accident on Islington which is affecting buses coming out of the Birkenhead and Wallasey Tunnel , this is causing delays and cancellations."

Thomas Munns, who was waiting to get the bus home, said: "I’ve been waiting for a New Brighton bus for over an hour. I tweeted Arriva and they said there’s been a crash.

"The bus queues were stretching right around the corner on Cook Street."

Video taken inside the Birkenhead tunnel showed cars and buses backed up for the length of the tunnel heading towards the city centre.
