Hour by hour weather forecast as more heavy snow due to hit the North East

The region was hit with heavy snow overnight and it looks like the wintry weather is set to stay.

Storm Darcy has brought wind, rain and recently heavy snow as the Met Office has issued several yellow and amber weather warnings around the UK.

While families have been enjoying the snow, with one teenager husky sledding along Newcastle's Quayside, the Met Office has extended a yellow weather warning for snow and ice to Friday.

The warning will now take place from Thursday at midnight until Friday at noon.

The warning states that although the snow may not be as heavy as the region has experienced over the last few days, further snow showers could bring disruption to travel in places.

The weather forecast for the region today states: "Another very cold day with frequent snow showers leading to further accumulations in places.

"Remaining breezy at the coast although winds will become much lighter than recently. Ice and frost will be widespread with temperatures remaining below freezing for some. Maximum temperature 1 °C."
