Hour by hour forecast as yellow weather warning predicts snow for Thursday

A weather warning for snow has been issued for parts of the North East as the wintry weather is set to continue.

The Met Office has issued the warning to be in place from 4am on Thursday morning right through to 3pm.

The warning predicts heavy snow will cause travel disruption with Darlington, Durham and Northumberland among the areas being affected.

The warning states: "Heavy snow may lead to some travel disruption."

Thursday's weather forecast for the region states: "A band of rain and snow will continue to move slowly northeastwards during Thursday.

"Some significant snowfall on the hills, but not exclusively. Snow turning lighter and patchy overnight."

It comes a week after Storm Christoph left behind a wake of destruction with thousands forced to flee their homes and flood warnings issued up and down the country.

Forecasters explained: "A band of snowfall will likely push northeast into this region during the early hours of Thursday and become slow-moving.

"Snow may fall to lower elevations for a time with some locations seeing several cm by morning, however above 200m elevation significant and prolonged snowfall is possible throughout Thursday, with the potential for 15-30cm to accumulate which may lead to transport disruption."
