Cool paintings are greeting hot travelers this summer at two train stations in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, known as the hottest city in Japan. The artwork, with the theme of coolness, is pasted onto stairs at JR Kumagaya Station and JR Kagohara Station.
The city selected one "best" painting and five "excellent" works from 22 submitted by artists in the city and elsewhere. The images were printed on stickers that were then pasted onto station stairs.
In the 10th year of the art contest, the best work, "Chosei" (Clear and clean), by vocational school student Risa Miyata of Fukaya, Saitama Prefecture, was displayed on the steps of the front entrance of Kumagaya Station. It depicts a high school girl in a sailor suit uniform looking up at the sun in clear weather.
"I used a lot of blue to make people feel cool. The novel coronavirus situation is tough, but I hope we will have a bright future," Miyata said.
The works will be exhibited until Sept. 30.
