Hotter heatwaves could pave way for more heavy and humid nights in years to come

Hot, humid and sometimes stormy evenings, otherwise known as 'tropical nights' will become more likely in years to come, warn climate specialists.

Meteorologists say rising temperatures will lead to more frequent and extreme heatwave conditions during the warmer months in the UK as global warming continues.

Warm fronts that usually stop in France have started to sweep across southern and central England in recent years.

In 2019, the hottest temperature record in England was broken when temperatures in Cambridge reached 38.7 degrees.

In July 2020, Heathrow recorded its highest ever temperature of 37.8 degrees which could be beaten again as the heatwave continues.

Experts have also warned 'tropical nights' could become more frequent in the years, which could result in many sleepless nights for some and pose serious health risks for the elderly and others.

What is a 'tropical night'?

Scientists class a tropical night as any night which doesn't fall below 20 degrees between sunset to sunrise.

Between 1961 and 1990, the Met Office recorded 44 tropical nights.

That number almost doubled over the next three decades to 84, between 1991 and 2020.

Already in August 2020, there have been three tropical nights recorded.

What's the difference between a 'tropical night' and a 'tropical storm'?

Tropical lightning storms, or an electrical storm, can happen during hot weather, but can't be formally classed as a tropical storm unless they are combined with serious gusts of wind.

A tropical storm gains its classification from winds that reach 74 mph.

The last time a tropical storm hit the UK was in October 2019, when the tail end of Storm Lorenzo hit England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
