Hotel staff reveal millionaires' weirdest requests - from mermaids to indoor grass

A billionaire demanded fizzy water to wash their hair while another asked for an inside patch of grass for their dog, hotel insiders have revealed.

The world of the rich and famous is there for all the see on TV and Instagram, with many of society's most affluent enthusiastically offering an insight into what life with a pocket full of cash is like.

While we may be used to seeing the great and good posing by the pool or on the bonnet of their fast cars, there's a level of rich above this that is much more secretive.

The multi-billionaires tend to be a little more coy about how they spend their mega bucks and, if the testimony of hotel insiders is anything to go by, with good reasons.

Employees at high end establishments from Costa Rica to Switzerland have shared the most outrageous requests they've received from their uber-wealth customers with the Washington Post.

They spoke to the newspaper to coincide with the release of the second series of White Lotus, a drama based in a hotel which satirises the lives of the rich and famous.

New York City tour guide Christina Stanton lifted the lid on what it was like to work with a Russian oligarch and his wife.

On one occasion she took the wife to Bergdorf Goodman, which had closed especially for her, prompting the well heeled shopper to spend $4million.

When the family went out to eat at restaurants only their bodyguards spoke to the waiters.

Inside Europe Travel Experiences travel planner Sandra Weinacht spoke of a hotel where staff had to order in cases of Sanpellegrino sparkling water for a Russian client.

The guest - who refused to accept any other brand of mineral water - used it to wash his hair with.

Another absurd request was shared by a spokesperson for the Nightfall Group, who said that a guest renting a Los Angeles mansion had demanded a mermaid costume be delivered to her within one hour.

The customer wanted to swim in their pool for a party, in a quality costume that had gills.

One user of private jet hire company Monarch Air Group once hired a $60,000 plane to fly their Pomeranian and Siberian Husky mix named Bella from Santa Barbara to Vancouver.

A Russian guests at the Dolder Grand hotel in Zurich got staff to bring up a square of lawn to her hotel, so that her dog could go to the bathroom on it.

"She asked us to organize a piece of lawn so that her dog could pee in the suite and she didn't have to leave the hotel," said hotelier Jens Maier.

Luckily Jens managed to find a bit of artificial grass at short notice.
