Hotel shaped like a guitar to open in Florida

We’ve had robot hotels, hotels shaped like dogs and hotels built almost entirely underground.

Now there’s a new bizarre bolthole on the scene: a hotel shaped like a guitar.

This autumn, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood in Southern Florida will open its $1.5bn (£1.2bn) guitar-shaped expansion, with Maroon 5 as the opening act.

Designed to resemble back-to-back guitars, the 137-metre-high hotel will house 638 rooms and suites.

It opens on 24 October, and Maroon 5 will play the night after.

The guitar expansion, designed by architects Klai Juba Wald with interiors by David Rockwell, will focus on live music, with a new venue called Hard Rock Live.

There will also be a new spa, 13.5 acres of “recreational waterscape”, shops and meeting space; as well as 3,000 slot machines and views across Southern Florida with floor to ceiling glass windows in every room.

“We wanted to build something special,” Jim Allen, CEO of Hard Rock, said.

The Hard Rock website describes the Guitar Hotel as an “architectural marvel” which ”redefines the South Florida skyline”.

Rooms will be available to book from 24 July.
