Hotel plans for historic Dunnes store in city centre

One of 's most iconic buildings could be transformed into a 112- bedroom hotel.

A planning application to Glasgow City Council has been put forward by Manor Property Group to turn the former Dunnes Store into a hotel.

The building in the city centre currently occupies a prominent corner location on one of Glasgow’s busiest shopping spots - but has been empty since the department store closed it's doors in 2018.

It's thought the property was first built in 1929, replacing the traditional stone tenement style block that was once home to the Balmoral Hotel.

In the 1950s the building became a commercial outlet, first as a C&A shop and then later a Dunnes store.

Although the building is not listed, planners say they are committed to "preserving its existing character" as the site is "a good example of period architecture dating from the 1920’s".

Plans reveal that the hotel, which would be known as Qtel, would also include bar, restaurant and gym along with associated external seating on Sauchiehall Street.

A statement contained within the planning application, which will go between the council's planning committee, reads: "This development will be the first Qtel in Scotland. The proposals comprise of the conversion of the existing building to a fully serviced hotel with bar and restaurant facilities along with associated external seating on Sauchiehall Street.

"Following townscape analysis and site appraisal the proposals account for a two storey rooftop extension to maximise bedroom accommodation. The hotel reception and restaurant/ cafe/bar will be located at Ground Level, with ancillary and back of house areas given over to the Basement - which will also include a gym and meeting rooms for hire.

"The building is currently vacant and given the recent focus of the Avenues Project a hotel in this location would be a welcome addition to Sauchiehall Street and Glasgow.
