Hotel nightmare as Stereophonics fans row with staff and end up sleeping in lobby

It was meant to be a night to remember.

But when a large group of Stereophonics fans checked into a hotel ahead of watching their idols play their first gig in 16 months, their stay soon turned into a nightmare.

Because upon arriving at The Grand Hotel in Scarborough on Wednesday,July 28, they found themselves having to wait for two hours just to check in.

Huge queues could be seen snaking all around the hotel, causing many fans to get anxious they'd miss the start of the Cwmaman rockers' concert at the nearby Open Air Theatre.

Some, who had paid more than £200 for a room, instead opted to come back and try again after the show had finished, only to find their booking had been allocated to someone else.

According to The Mirror, one couple described how, when they finally did get upstairs, the bed wasn't made and the carpet was "filthy."

This led to heated early hours arguments with staff who threatened to call the police.

A number of 'Phonics fans faced having to spend the rest of the night sleeping in the hotels' reception area, while others simply cancelled their reservations and made the long drive home.

Roz Cartwright, who'd driven up from Sheffield with her partner, said she'd been told a glitch with the hotel's booking system had caused the long wait.

But when she raised her voice staff warned they would call 999.

"It was appalling. You don't pay £200 to be told that if you complain you're going to be arrested and removed," she said.

"We went to the gig and had a great time and then came back to the hotel and it was carnage."

Britannia, the hotel's owner, has been contacted for comment.
