Hotel horrifies its customers by charging £16 for basket of bread starter

An upmarket London restaurant has horrified customers by charging an "outrageous" £16 for a basket of bread.

The Dorchester Polo Lounge, based on a rooftop in Mayfair's Park Lane, came under fire from social media users today who said their bread basket was unreasonably expensive.

For a few pounds short of £20, customers received a Sea Salt Pretzel, Butter Brioche and a Garlic and Cheese Baguette.

Fortunately, patrons don't have to cough up extra for their spreads, with cajun butter and chive cream cheese included in the price.

The Polo Lounge offers "live music, Polo lounge classics and sumptuous cocktails" and a rooftop setting.

The venue, which overlooks the city skyline, has been running as a pop-up restaurant this summer.

Social media users, outraged by the prices, hoped their money could go a little further.

One said he hoped he could "take the baker home with me for that [price]".

Another wrote that reading the Dorchester's pricing attempt "ruined my morning."

A French foodie said bread baskets should be "provided free with every meal".

"Millions reliant on food banks. Children going hungry during school holidays,'" a concerned restaurant-goer wrote.

"Meanwhile, at The Dorchester, £16 for the bread basket please."

One man, who worked in the "bread business", said it isn't just the Dorchester charging "outrageous" sums on the staple food.

He added that the "mark up" on breads were comparable to those on wines.

Another, who had done their research, commented on the other exorbitant prices on the menu.

"The bread basket is £16. The salads start at £28. A bowl of pasta is £38. A steak is £135,' the user wrote.

"7x mark up on wine … I believe the Bank of England - it’s only temporary inflation"
