Hotel flooded and guests evacuated as Barmouth hit by flash storm

A hotel bar was flooded as heavy rain and flash floods hit parts of Wales.

Guests had to be evacuated from the bottom bar of The Royal in Barmouth as the region saw torrential rain and thunderstorms on Monday afternoon, and the hotel saw around four inches of water flood the basement area.

Toilets that were flooded had only just been refurbished during lockdown, and will now have to have more work done.

There were several businesses in the coastal town affected as drains overflowed.

Parts of Aberystwyth were also hit by flash flooding leaving pavements and roads underwater, with water pouring into shops and business owners sweeping rain water out of their premises.

More than a dozen homes were reportedly struck by lightning at Penrhyn Madoc, in  Penrhyn Bay, and hailstones the size of golf balls set off car alarms in Capel Curig.

Describing the moment the hotel started flooding manager Shelby Finn said: "It had been a really muggy day and quite overcast and then around 4pm this storm came out of nowhere.

"It started spitting and then within seconds it was pouring down. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. The drain started blocking and then our toilets that had only just been refurbished started flooding.

"There was between three and four inches of rain so we had to start moving some of the guests out to the upper bar. There were a few businesses affected and one had to lock the doors to keep customers in.

"It is dry today but there are more storms forecast this week so we will be keeping a very close eye on the weather."

Wales is covered by a severe weather warning for thunderstorms until the end of Thursday, with the Met Office warning of flash flooding, lightning strikes and large hail.
